TONI&GUY CLOTHING

TONI&GUY is a British international chain of hairdressing salons founded in 1963 by brothers Toni and Guy Mascolo. It is now a well-established global brand with over 780 salons.

The process for creating these garments started while speaking to Enzo Papandrea, manager of the Brentwood TONI&GUY branch, whilst cutting my hair. We discussed his current uniform of a simple black t-shirt with a little embroidered logo and decided it could be improved. We talked over on how I may be able to help with that.

His brief was ‘something that made a statement while fitting in with the already well recognised TONI&GUY branding’. Alongside this he asked for something he would be happy to wear outside the salon that wouldn’t look out of place. Plus, he wanted to include their sponsorship for London Fashion Week that TONI&GUY were promoting at the time.

I suggested an Airtech fabric for the T-shirts. The breathable fabric will be perfect for keeping cool in those hot days in the salon; and using Airtech also gives unlimited design protentional due to the capabilities of the fabric being fully printable.

Regards to the design itself, TONI&GUY is known for its fashion led approach to hairdressing. I used this as a jumping off point in my designs to create something that matches that manner. Making 1963, the year the first salon was established as the focal in the design showcased the longevity of the brand and produced the statement that Enzo was looking for. Also, keeping within the brands style of a simple black and white colour pallet, the use of negative space throughout all the design was a must as I didn’t want the design to fall back into the same category as Enzo’s initial conclusion of a black t-shirt with a logo on it.
